Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared a decrease in the price of LPG cylinders, prompting the Opposition to question the timing of the announcement.

On International Women's Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant announcement, stating a reduction of ₹100 in the prices of domestic gas cylinders. This decision, aimed at easing the financial burdens of millions of households, particularly benefits women across the nation, emphasized PM Modi.

"With a reduction of ₹100 in LPG cylinder prices, our government seeks to alleviate financial strains on households, especially benefiting our Nari Shakti," PM Modi expressed on X.

He further highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring a healthier environment and empowering women through affordable cooking gas. Additionally, the Central government extended the subsidy of ₹300 per LPG cylinder to poor women under the Ujjwala Yojana for the upcoming fiscal year starting April 1.

PM Modi also took the opportunity to greet the nation on International Women's Day, acknowledging the strength, courage, and resilience of India's women. He reiterated the government's dedication to empowering women through various initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, and more, emphasizing the progress made over the last decade.

NCP (SCP) MP Supriya Sule criticized the announcement as mere rhetoric, questioning the timing amidst the looming elections.

"I'm not surprised at all. Consider the timing. They've been in power for nine years. Why didn't they consider this earlier? It's just another rhetorical statement, especially with elections around the corner, likely to be announced in the next 5 or 6 days," she remarked. "This is just another gimmick... During our tenure, the cylinder was priced at ₹430. Why can't they match that?" Sule added.

Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput accused the BJP of manipulation, alleging that they inflate the prices of cylinders to ₹1000 and then announce a reduction of ₹100.

Samajwadi Party Mahila Sabha national president Juhie Singh criticized PM Modi's Ujjwala Yojna as fraudulent, urging for genuine economic empowerment of women.

"Mahadev is witnessing how people are being misled by the BJP government. Cylinder prices are escalating. PM Modi should not confine his visits to only 'sponsored parts' of villages but should witness firsthand how Ujjwala Yojna is deceiving people," she asserted. "Empowering women economically is crucial for societal development," Singh emphasized.

TMC leader Sagarika Ghose raised suspicions regarding the timing of the decision, insinuating political motives.

"Just days before the 2024 general elections, the Modi government reduces LPG prices. Why couldn't this have been done earlier when women consumers struggled with high prices even when global prices were low? Now, as elections approach, LPG prices drop. It's the pinnacle of political cynicism! India needs a Prime Minister, not an election strategist," Ghose remarked on X.
