In a shocking turn of events, an under-construction bridge in Bihar, estimated to cost Rs 1710 crore, has collapsed for the second time in just 14 months. The incident has raised concerns about the quality of infrastructure projects and the effectiveness of oversight measures in the region. With the collapse occurring in close proximity to its previous failure, it is crucial to examine the reasons behind such recurring incidents.

The under-construction bridge, situated in Bihar, had already experienced a collapse in April 2022, just a year before this recent incident. The bridge, which was expected to facilitate smoother transportation and contribute to the region's development, had become a symbol of failed infrastructure management.

According to reports from local authorities, the bridge collapse has led to significant financial losses and further delays in completing the project. The estimated cost of the bridge construction was a staggering Rs 1710 crore, making it one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in the state.

The collapse has raised questions about the quality of materials used, the construction techniques employed, and the lack of proper oversight during the project's execution. Concerns have been raised regarding the adherence to safety protocols and the competence of the agencies responsible for monitoring the construction process.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone of the 3.1 km long bridge on the Ganga river in 2015. Constructed by SP Singla Constructions Private Limited, it was scheduled to be completed in five years but the deadline was extended multiple times. Notably, it is not the first time the bridge was damaged. The previous collapse of the bridge was reported in April last year yet the quality seems to have remained unchanged. Surprisingly, this bridge is said to be the dream project of the Bihar CM and was to be inaugurated soon as 80% of the task was complete and ₹1710 crore has been spent.

Chief Minister Statements:

Expressing his deep concern over the recurring collapses of the bridge, the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, has vowed to initiate a thorough investigation into the matter. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of holding those responsible accountable for their negligence and ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future.

The Chief Minister has also announced the formation of a high-level committee consisting of experts and officials to investigate the structural integrity of the bridge and identify the lapses in the construction process. This committee will analyze the causes behind the repeated failures and propose necessary measures to prevent such incidents in future infrastructure projects.

Additionally, the Chief Minister has assured the public that stringent action will be taken against those found guilty of compromising the quality and safety of the infrastructure project. He has pledged to restore public trust by implementing more robust mechanisms for ensuring the quality and timely completion of construction projects across the state.
