The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the intensification of Cyclone Biparjoy, categorized as a "very severe" cyclonic storm, within the next 24 hours. The cyclone is expected to move in a north-northeast direction, posing a potential threat to the coastal regions of Kerala and Karnataka. As a precautionary measure, the IMD has issued a heavy rain alert for these areas, urging residents to take necessary precautions. Additionally, the Lakshadweep islands are also expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next two days.

Alerts and Precautions:

Several districts in Kerala have been issued a yellow alert, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur. This alert signifies the possibility of heavy rainfall in these areas. In light of the approaching cyclone, fishermen in Kerala and Karnataka have been advised not to venture out into the sea, prioritizing their safety.

Cyclone Biparjoy's Current Status:

As of 9th June, Cyclone Biparjoy was located over the east-central Arabian Sea near latitude 16.0N and longitude 67.4E. The IMD expects the cyclone to strengthen further and continue moving in a north-northeast direction over the next 24 hours. This intensification poses a potential threat to the coastal regions in its path.

Precautionary Measures in Valsad:

In anticipation of Cyclone Biparjoy, precautionary measures have been implemented in Valsad, Gujarat. High waves have been observed at Tithal Beach on the Arabian Sea coast, prompting authorities to temporarily close the beach to tourists until 14th June. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea, and arrangements have been made to shift residents living near the shore to safer locations if necessary.

Forecast Details:

The IMD has provided a detailed forecast for the coming days. The following are the key highlights:

  • Light to moderate scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over south Indian states for the next five days.
  • Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala and Coastal Karnataka over the next three days, and in Lakshadweep over the next two days.
  • North East India is expected to experience light to moderate scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning for the next five days.
  • Very heavy rainfall is predicted at isolated places in Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on 9th June, and in Assam & Meghalaya on 12th and 13th June. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya over the next five days, and in Manipur & Mizoram on 10th and 12th June.
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim may witness very heavy rainfall at isolated places from 11th to 13th June.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands will experience isolated heavy rainfall from 9th to 11th June, while Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim will witness isolated heavy rainfall on 9th and 10th June.
